Meeting Frequency & Location | Financing of CED

CED is housed in the offices of the California Council for Environmental and Economic Balance (CCEEB), and is a collaborative effort including CCEEB and Sustainable Conservation (SusCon). The main body of CED is the Plenary. Each member of the Plenary is confirmed through unanimous vote. With approximately thirty members, we seek to balance between the business and non-governmental organization seats. CED has three permanent seats reserved for the Secretary of the California Environmental Protection Agency, the Secretary of the California Resources Agency, and the Administrator of US EPA, Region IX. All business members are also members of CCEEB. Two working groups that explore specific issue areas in-depth supplement the on-going dialogue of the Plenary. Each working group is co-chaired by one business and one NGO member. These co-chairs are responsible for approving participants and setting agendas. Participants in the working groups often are from CED member organizations and companies, but may include representatives from other non-CED organizations. The working groups tend to attract participants with technical knowledge or expertise in the specific issue areas, and can be a way for others to become familiar with the CED culture. The working groups are: Meeting Frequency and Location
The CED Plenary meets every other month in locations throughout California for two full days of dialogue. Whenever possible, we choose locations that reflect the work of CED. For example, the group has met at the Costanoa Lodge, adjacent to the Cascade Ranch State Park, a major conservation effort to preserve open space on the California coast. We also look for sites that are conducive to dialogue and break away from the traditional boardroom setting.

Working groups meet on a regular schedule determined by our co-chairs. Occasionally, the working groups will be invited to a Plenary meeting for a joint dialogue.

Financing of CED
CED is funded by business membership dues and foundation grants that cover expenses related to NGO members. This mix helps us maintain an objective balance. CED underwrites the costs to our NGO members, ensuring that all are able to participate regardless of expense.

We wish to thank the generosity of our foundation grantors who make the work of CED possible:

  • William and Flora Hewlett Foundation
  • Irvine Foundation
  • Compton Foundation
  • Gerbode Foundation
  • Packard Foundation
